One Mattress Too Few

Two of my nephews came for a sleepover. One (11) clutching a 'Pirates of the Caribbean' DVD; the other (7) clutching his special milk and all manner of Spongebobbery to snuggle in bed. I'm proud of the younger boy and my daughter (also age 7), for having mastered the art of pretending to be asleep when they hear me walking upstairs. I'm sure they think I'm too dim to realise that all that giggling, rustling and thumping is actually them.

I meant to borrow my sister's zed-bed, wrote it on a list, and of course forgot. So the big bulky 11-year old is now trying to sleep on some rather narrow sofa cushions, held together with an elasticated sheet, underneath my son's cabin bed. In my defence, I did try to alleviate the bed shortage by inviting one of my kids to sleep in with me tonight, but they solemnly shook their heads. No. Way. Jose.

  1. Thank you - to my darling sister for having my sons for the night - hope they didn't wake you up too early! And I took your advice and didn't drink any wine at the concert we went to last night. May have had one too many G&Ts though......

  6. Why on earth would they want to sleep with you when all the fun is happening elsewhere? Midnight feasts, reading with a torch under the covers, complaining about the biscuit crumbs from the midnight feast, telling ghost stories, getting scared by the ghost stories and having to call Mum for help...

Oh, happy memories. But enough from my university days...

  7. It's all part of the fun of a sleepover, making up the beds from sofa cushions! Love the fact they were so good at pretending to be asleep!
Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment!

  8. Do you reckon our kids have more sleepovers than we did at their age?

  9. DM, I reckon so. But I think mine at 7 & 6 aren't old enough to sleep over at a friend's unless they and I know the kids & both parents very very well. Or perhaps that's just me being overprotective!!!

  10. Aah........ they much prefer to be giggling together than sleeping with Mum. No fun at all, that!

  12. Crystal, a zed-bed is metal-framed fold-away bed with thin mattress! Thanks for coming in.
