Be Gone, Comfortable Cookies

"You Eat What You Are". I know, I know, but I just think that's a better expression than the usual, "You Are What You Eat". Everybody knows that if you cram cakes, fried egg sandwiches and chocolate down your throat all day long, you're going to get a bit chubby. News, what news? Saying "You Are What You Eat" is just a great steaming pile of patronising twaddle telling us what we already know.

Turn it around however, and you get something much more interesting. People cram cakes, fried egg sandwiches and chocolate down their throats all day long for a reason. They need something ... no, not nutrition ... comfort. Frustrated? Stuff ya face. Lonely? Stuff ya face. Hate your body? Stuff ya face.

Fat tastes gooood. Sugar tastes gooood. Slowly curling your tongue (tired from moaning) around vanilla ice cream oozing raspberry sauce feeeels gooood. Salty crisps distract you from the paperwork mountain. Brownies cushion the blow of a bitchy remark. A sneaky spoonful of chocolate spread from the jar is sweet mini revenge for the bitter tedium of grumpy kids kicking off at bedtime.

Forgive me for coming over all evangelical, but I'm trying to shed the extra pounds I don't need before my holiday, and it's taken me 6 months to get round to it. And for my beloved friends hooked on calorie comfort, I wish them the power to dig deep and find enough love for themselves to STOP!

  5. I and potty Mummy are in a joined diet fest, she's lost some already (humph!). I haven't, my glass of water tastes disgusting , would much rather a steaming cup of tea with sugar, but there you go!
It's either that or rename my computer a belly top!

  6. great post!
Eating is a way of dealing with the unknown - the known is better than the unknown for eaters. Be adventurous and explore the unknown, you'd be surprised at what you will uncover.

  7. Hmmm. I like to eat just about everything. What does that say I am? :)

Damn us and our famine-ready, fat hoarding, slowly evolving bodies.

  10. I too am trying to fight my way out of my baby fat suit (there is thin person in there and she WILL come out!)
I am a comfort eater (children playing up? Chocolate finger will solve that. Tough day at work? Reach for a Magnum). But I tell you what, I think I have turned a corner. I turned to hypnotherapy and by gum I think it's working . . .

  11. You need a builder. When we had the builder last the bathroom scales got so dusty that I threw that out and two and a half years later I am still waiting for a full length mirror. My clothes still fit, I think.

  13. I am discovering the joys of cigarette eating which is no good at all, and rather than loosing weight as you are, I am putting it on! When before I would have reached for a cigarette (especially when I am tired) I am now reaching for something nice like biscuits, or sweets - its awful. I am going to have to find another way of doing this!!

  14. I love your 'handy' post...beautifully written! And as for this one....well, I'm hanging my head in shame as I munch through an extra large chocolate chip cookie. I think I'll go swap it for a carrot now.

And yes...I agree, it's all so true.

  16. I'm right there with ya! Going to STOP. I'm a little serotonin challenged right now, though, and that gives me a voracious appetite for carbs. It's showing. :-P

  17. Oh Lor I gotta go eat now. Very true words. And toast with lashings of butter is yummy. As is chocolate. And all the other stuff.

And what's wrong with comfort eating anyway? It's... comfortable! lol
