Away With the Fairies

Okay, just ignore that last post. Today I took a phone call from the estate agent handling the sale of the house we've been renting for 6 months; the sale has fallen through so we don't have to move out now after all. Over the last 6 weeks it's been on, then doubtful, then back on again ... and now off. I've been grumblingly dragging my weary bones around town looking at other (unsuitable) houses to rent. Apparently the bloke buying the house belonging to the people buying this one has had his mortgage offer withdrawn by the bank. Gut-wrenching news for all concerned, except us! So now I'm looking at the pile of boxes I've already packed, and trying to decide whether to unpack them or not.

I wonder what will occur on Monday. Someone who is said to be 'away with the fairies' has lost their grip on reality and expects the unlikely. If I unpack, does that make me away with the fairies too?

  1. What a nightmare. Hope your birthsign isn't Taurus, we Taureans would absolutely hate being in limbo like that re moving/not moving scenario.

Hoe things get sorted out for you soon.

  2. Well thats a relief. I really sympathise. I was in the same position exactly this time last year with the landlord announcing he had sold the house from under my feet. I couldn't face the thought of renting again...on my own with the three children - it was a nightmare. Anyway. It all worked out in the end. I bought somewhere and for the children it was the right decision as they are far more settled. If I still had a partner I would carry on renting - I think it's great not to be tied to a house....lots of advantages. Lx

  3. Great stuff, what a relief for you all. Yeah, unpack - it won't do your psyche any good looking at packed boxes - you and the kids will fee unsettled albeit it a subcobscious way. Maybe wait a few weeks though to see if this guy gets another mortgage offer - he's not going to give up trying that easily! Feet up, cup of tea and a deep breath!

  5. What a relief but horrible to be living in limbo. I think I'd keep stuff packed as they obviously want to sell sometime and maybe keep an eye out for another house with a tighter rental agreement.
Hope things get settled for you. It's a horrible situation:-(

  6. Unpack. You can't live your life according to what might happen- I know - it took us two years to sell our house due to sales falling through - at first I stopped putting effort into the garden, but realised I was the one missing out, so I did loads in the garden regardless of whether we were selling or not.

  7. A tough one... but... unpack! I'm with the above comment. You can't live out of boxes on if, buts or maybes!

  8. Had similar problem in reverse. Estate Agent blatently lied to our buyers that we were in a hurry to move out. This meant that buyers arranged bridging loan and we moved into a really really horrible holiday cottage (cheap) waiting for our new build house to be completed. It was pure hell.

  13. Hi!
What a nightmare! I hope you manage to get settled somewhere soon! It's stressful living like that with packed boxes.
I am in a similar position to you... been kind of in limbo for the last year looking at houses getting ready to move, off and on again, living with packed boxes e.t.c... but hopefully I will find somewhere great soon.
All the very best for you!
And pass by my Blog... you have a "Good Heart" award to pick up!!

  14. bgs - the UK property market is in serious trouble, much more than the ruling classes or the media will let on. And it will get worse. So chances are you can unpack 'cos the house is unlikely to sell any time soon.

If you want to think about buying, a couple of years from now could be good. How to finance it? Get yourself a spread-bet account and start shorting banks, real estate and building firms!

  15. Despite everyone else telling you to unpack, I say leave it all in the boxes and just take out what you need. I have a sneaking suspicion that half the boxes might never be opened. In which case you can either throw out or give away the contents for good!

  16. To unpack or not to unpack, that is the question! Take out what you need! Don't tempt fate!

  18. Completely forgot to ask you last time where your house in Cheshire is as that is my neck of the woods!!? Glad to hear that you are not having the carpet pulled out from under you, and I really hope that it stays that way, by now businesses have closed for the day, so you should know!

I am dyslexic, and I am about to have my fourth try at the letter salad for the word verification, wish me luck!

  19. Yeah...too many boxes is a nightmare. Wish I could be strong and sort ours out (i.e. chuck stuff away). Unpack and enjoy each day as it comes.

  20. Oh, well, that's good news for you. The market really is impossible for most people. Lucky for you though. M xx
PS. Forgot to say how lovely your Cheshire garden sounded. Hard to leave I should think.
