Never Mind the Tupperware

I was invited to my first ever Tupperware party. I nearly said "do I look like the kind of woman who buys bloody tupperware?" Or, "thanks, but I'd rather poke my own eyes out". But what I actually said was: "Brilliant, I'd love to come". Times is hard, ya know?

The charming hostess had been concocting nibbles all week. And I'm not talking sausage rolls and celery sticks here; this was one mouth-wateringly awesome hand-crafted canape explosion. The booze was flowing like ... well, wine ... and a hit-squad of expert mothers, who know their Tequila from their Kahlua, were whipping up and dishing out cocktails like tomorrow's children and hangovers were off the radar.

The Tupperware presentation started. We ooohed at the storage box that expands. We aaahed at the microwave jug that doesn't get a hot handle. We basked in the warm ripple of approval that washed over the crowd, as we saw just how magnificantly that happy-chopper can chop. Some mothers concentrated and referred to their catalogues; others exchanged subversive glances and sniggered into their Harvey Wallbangers.

It was drizzling, but the crowd stayed outside with the candles and ice-buckets of pink fizz. Alpha mums swaggered and laughed the loudest; Cuddly mums swapped stories of their childrens' antics; The atmosphere was warm and funny, and I found friendly people to talk to. It got dark, then chilly, and then I drove home.

  2. well that certainly isn't like the old tupperware parties that my mom used to attend back in the day. of course if it were, she would probably be laid out on the floor considering she rarely drinks, and when she does, she's a major lightweight. but then again, so am i. you might have had to scrape me off the floor as well. lol

  5. Oh the memories .. did you play games and get prizes? The one and only ever Tupperware Party I was invited to AND attended they played games and there were prizes ... no booze .. no canapes ... some crudite and dip ... I think ... possibly coffee. I can see how booze would liven things up ....

And that odd looking chap in my Brussels photo was a total stranger, I suspect I didnt even notice him til I got the film back .. it was 1998 after all and I didnt have a digital ... or even a cellphone for that matter. And it was January so chances are it was an unattractive plaid flannel shirt ...

  8. Just full of things you didn't know you needed and then you can't live without them.

    Like an Ann Summers party...

  10. This made me smile:-) I love the colours of the original Tupperware and can still remember the smell.

Sounds like a jolly evening. I think I'd definitely have been talking with the 'cuddly mums':-)

  11. Never mind the refreshment. Did you buy some tupperware?

  12. Did you not buy anything? They used to be all the rage, these Tupperware parties, when my kids were young. That was in the days before cheap little containers came onto the market from Wilkinsons. That must have been the death knell!

  13. Great this story. I'm with Debs lehner though - I love storage boxes! Haven't been to a tupperware party in years but have been invited to Anne Summers' parties - always give themn a miss. Cackling pissed giggly women demonstrating the rabbit vibrator doesn't do it for me as a bonding exercise!

  14. Haven't bought any Tupperware for ages. Do you still have to burp it, or have they now invented the self-burping sort?

  15. Sounds good to me GBS, lots of people making lots of effort to ensure a good time was had by all. I would have liked to chat with the cuddly mums or let my secret competitive nature flow with the Alpha mums but as you saw from my latest post sadly I would have had to search hard for a Violet Kray lookie-likie to find some common ground...blogthatmamax

  16. I don't suppose they told you how you can end up with 16 lids that have no bottoms? I finally exploded last week when they were rolling all over my cupboard. Got them all out, matched them up, stacked them together - and found 16 extra lids. Usually I would keep them (just in case) but this time i was very disciplined and just threw them out.

  18. I've just been through oyr posts and I cannot believe how long it is since I've commented! Sorry about that. I am struggling to get around blogs at the moment and I know I have read yours, but seem to have neglected to click on comment.
So, I am still with you, and I am really glad you got the option to unpack - have you done it yet? - and glad that you're still able to blog.

Cos I still come over and giggle. ;0)

  19. It sounds as if you had a good evening, but did you actually buy? I have never been to a tupperware party, but after listening to your description I think I would be much more likely to say yes! I have however been to an Ann Summers party in my younger years!!!

  20. As so many of you lovely folk have asked ... I haven't bought anything YET because it was so dark that no one was able to look at the tupperware!!! And I also forgot. But I left with a catalogue and promised to bring the order form to school ... which I will eventually ... It would be pretty tight to turn up and stuff your face and not buy anything, in my view.
